Which eyebrow product should you use for the brows you want?

Whether the goal is thicker but natural looking brows or bold and defined ones, you should be aware of the best brow products for the job, from pencils and gels to waxes and powders.

If you want natural looking brows:

While it's true most brow products will do the trick as long as you apply it right, the easiest products for achieving this look are a brow pencil or brow powders. These tools are also a great starting point if you have very sparse brows as you can fill in the "bald spots" while keeping your brows looking natural.

Something like Mac's new Veluxe Brow Liner ($31) is great for beginners. It has a pencil that is neither so hard it scratches your skin, nor so soft it breaks.

Instead, it boasts a rich and powdery matte finish on application. The powder is easily diffused with the spoolie brush on the other end if you draw a line that's too harsh, and the colour blends well throughout the brow. It gives great buildable pigment and is available in 10 shades for every brow colour.

If you want a slight gradient to your brows, you can either get two shades of the Veluxe Brow Liner or try a powder compact like Make Up Store Tri Brow ($41) or Mac Brow Duo ($41). You'll need an angled brow brush to apply the powder, but this will give you a more natural finish with the option of a slightly defined wing if you use a thinner brush.

Tip: Brush out the brow powder with a spoolie so it looks more blended and natural, especially if you're filling in sparse areas.

If you want bold and defined brows:

A more dense and pigmented crayon that tapers to a skinny point is great for defining your brow and drawing truly hair-like strokes to fill them in. Many brands like Tarte, Sephora, Marc Jacobs Beauty and Anastasia Beverly Hills have these skinny retractable crayons that make filling in your brows with a rich pigment a lot faster.

Alternatively, Make Up For Ever's Pro Sculpting Brow ($40) is a three-in-one tool with a retractable pencil that is wide with a pointed end for pencil-like precision and a thicker end to fill in your brows with ease. It also has a spoolie on one end and a highlight powder tucked into the middle for defining the brow bone.

As much as I love retractable brow products, they do tend to run out fairly quickly, which makes something like Tarte's Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse or Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade a great investment as they last a lot longer and a little goes a long way. You can easily diffuse the gel or mousse through your brows with a spoolie for a more natural look or go heavy-handed if that's your thing.

Tip: Try to use less brow product on the parts of your brow with more dense hairs for a more even finish.

To keep your brows in place all day:

A brow gel is all you need, and whether it's tinted or clear is up to you. Tinted brow gels are a great way to match your brows to your hair if you have lighter or dyed hair or just want your brows to look a different colour.

Brow gels have tiny mascara wands that are perfect for getting at all your brow hairs without getting any product on the rest of your eyelid. Some great tinted options out there are Benefit Gimme Brow and Urban Decay Brow Tamer ($30). If you just want a clear gel, try Make Up For Ever's Brow Seal.

Mac brow products will be available in stores from 4 March 2016.
