How do I style midi tube skirts?

A marriage of two rather conservative styles - the pencil skirt and the midi-length skirt - the midi tube skirt adds a cool factor to outfits with its form-fitting silhouette.

Reinvented this season in a slightly longer style past the knees, the length makes it versatile for work and play.

A plain, solid-coloured one is a great work basic, while a bold, printed one is great for jazzing up casual separates such as a white T-shirt or sneakers for the weekend.

There are no hard and fast rules as to what footwear goes best with the style.

However, high-cut boots that hit the calf are the least flattering on petite women as it makes the legs look shorter.

Instead, go for heels or flat shoes that are cut low on the ankle to show as much skin as possible.

Here are four ways you can work the look, based on two skirts.

FEMININE

Wearing a pair of nude heels with this outfit is predictable - opt for a pair that has interesting details and a contrasting colour.

Pink cotton and silk top with draped sleeves, $125, from Cos; white cotton-blend knit skirt with slit detail, $65.90, from Mango; and pointy heels, $1,590, from Manolo Blahnik.

TOUGH/UTILITARIAN

When you need to run errands, be dressed comfortably and still look presentable, pair a sleeveless collared shirt with this skirt.

Add a grey, holey sweater for a grunge look.

Rayon sleeveless blouse, $39.90, from Uniqlo; black-and-red midi skirt, $84 (usual price $210), from Bimba Y Lola; and black Waterbuck boots, $299, from Timberland.

QUIRKY

Frills and colourful pom poms may seem over-the-top, but they can be balanced out with a plain skirt.

Blue top with white spots and pleated frills, $79.90, from Topshop; white cotton-blend knit skirt with slit detail, $65.90, from Mango; and pom pom leather sandals, $129, from Zara.

SPORTY

Go ahead and wear print-on-print and colours, but accessorise with a clutch instead of a backpack, which will make you look as if you are going to the gym.

White and yellow T-shirt, $119, from Lacoste; black-and-red midi skirt, $84 (usual price $210), from Bimba Y Lola; and red-and-white Puma sneakers, $129, from Leftfoot.
