Art lovers expericence 15th century masterpieces in southern France

The famous Quarries of Lights (known as Carrieres de Lumieres) in Les Baux-de-Provence, in France, will host a spectacular multimedia show.

The former bauxite (an aluminium ore) mine will feature Italian Renaissance artists Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo, tracing their careers from Milan to Florence, Venice and Rome.

The show runs until Jan 3 next year.

French tourism website rendezvousenfrance.com describes it as "high-performance technology that tailors music and images to completely permeate the enclosure. The digitised works of art come alive on the floor and on the quarry walls which are transformed into gigantic picture rails".

Each show consists of two films - a short and a main feature - said website Marvellousprovence.com.

Some of the multimedia presentations include da Vinci's Mona Lisa and The Last Supper; the ceiling vault of the Sistine Chapel and The Last Judgment by Michelangelo; and The Young Woman with Unicorn and the Triumph of Galatea by Raphael.

"The period during which these artists evolved (between the late 15th century and early 16th century) is undoubtedly one of the richest in the history of art.

"We wanted to dramatise in a sensitive and innovative way this richness, which expressed itself in drawing, painting, sculpture and architecture," an official told the website.
