Heavy snow disrupts Turkey flights, ferries, road traffic

ISTANBUL - Heavy snow forced the cancellation on Thursday of scores of flights from Turkey's main hub Istanbul and caused major disruption to road and sea traffic.

Turkish Airlines said 81 international and domestic flights in and out of Istanbul and some other cities including the capital Ankara had been cancelled.

Heavy snow began falling on Istanbul on Tuesday, causing traffic chaos and also forcing a crucial Champions League match between Turkish team Galatasaray and Italy's Juventus to be abandoned.

The game resumed on Wednesday, with Galatasary securing a 1-0 win to take it into the last 16.

A state airport official told AFP that more than 200 flights around the country had been cancelled since Tuesday.

Some ferries and intercity transport services have also been disrupted.

At least nine people were injured in Istanbul in dozens of road accidents caused by poor weather conditions that caused traffic snarl-ups, media reports said.
