SYDNEY - A massive thunderstorm passed over Sydney on Wednesday bringing heavy rain to Australia's most populous city and causing delays for some commuters and travellers, reported AFP.

Photos, many of which were shared on social media, showed huge clouds looming over different locations including the Sydney Opera House along Sydney Harbour, the central business district, and several beaches.

Flights due to land at Sydney Airport between 4.20pm and 5.20pm local time had to be diverted to other Australian airports as the thunderstorm passed over the area, according to a Sydney Morning Herald report.

Australia's Daily Telegraph said that the brief thunderstorm also affected peak-hour commuters as minor flooding caused delays on roads and subway lines.
