Popular Spanish chef dies after parachute fails during jump

Renowned Spanish television chef Dario Barrio died last Friday after his parachute failed to open during a wingsuit jump in Spain.

The 42-year-old was taking part in the International Air Festival in the province of Jaen, reported the Daily Mail. He had planned to jump from a castle in the Sierra de Segura mountain range as part of a tribute to his friend and television personality Alvaro Bulto, who died last August in the Swiss Alps while wingsuit flying.

All skydiving events at the festival have since been suspended.

Barrio, who came to Singapore in 2010 to conduct a masterclass during the World Gourmet summit, was reportedly a big fan of extreme sports. His YouTube channel contains several videos of him doing different aerial jumps.

His last flight in Jaen was captured on video by a fan.

Barrio leaves behind two sons aged five and seven. He recently separated from his wife Meredith Ortega, said a report from the UK's Telegraph.
