Ten dead in Oregon college shooting: sheriff

Ten people have been confirmed dead and seven others wounded in Thursday's shooting at a community college in the western US state of Oregon, a local official said. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the names of the victims would not be released for 24 to 48 hours pending notification of next of kin.

"At this time, we are reporting and can confirm ten fatalities in the shooting," he said, adding that there were also "seven additional injuries."

"We know there are conflicting reports of the numbers of casualties, and I can tell you that this number is the best, most accurate information we have at this time."

The 20-year-old gunman, who has not yet been identified, was killed following a shootout with police. It was not immediately clear if the shooter was counted in the death toll given by Hanlin.
