Time' magazine's latest cover is a bold shot at Donald Trump and Russia

Time magazine has set Twitter abuzz with its newest cover, featuring a mashup of the White House topped with the features of the iconic St. Basil's Cathedral which stands in Moscow's Red Square.

The accompanying story is a deep look at the way Russia has been exploiting and manipulating social media in the US and is well worth the read.

But it's the cover everyone is coming back to, a wide-open shot at an embattled President Trump and the federal investigation into his campaign's possible ties to Russia. It was done by Brobel Design, who also did the memorable Trump Oval Office windstorm cover from earlier in 2017.

Time's cover is just the latest in a line of magazine covers, including the New Yorker's James Comey/United passenger dragging mashup, to garner a widespread social media reaction for its depiction of the White House and Russia.

Time even did an animated version of the cover for online.

Inspired by the cover animation, several Twitter users began adding soundtracks to strengthen the cover's comparison.

In one tweet, filmmaker Matthew Cherry added music from Tetris, otherwise known as a very popular Russian video game from the '80s:

In another tweet, songwriter Holly O'Reilly layered audio from a Trump interview where he declares, "Russia is a ruse":

And then there were just the general jaw-dropped tweets about Time "going there":

That's not to say the cover went without criticism. Time faced some backlash after the cover reveal, with some users pointing out that the building mashed up with the White House was a cathedral, not the Kremlin:
