Undercover cop part of NY terror biker gang

An undercover New York Police Department (NYPD) detective was allegedly part of the motorcycle mob that terrorised a Manhattan couple last week.

The New York Daily News, quoting unnamed sources, said the detective was one of the two officers who were riding along. It is not known whether they were involved in beating up Mr Alexian Lien.

The Range Rover driven by Mr Lien had bumped a biker on the Henry Hudson Parkway. As bikers gathered around Mr Lien's vehicle, he took off, running over Mr Edwin Mieses, 32. It triggered the chase and vicious assault which followed.

Mr Mieses sustained serious spinal injuries, among others, and is in intensive care.

WABC television reported that there were five off-duty NYPD officers among the bikers. It is unclear if the undercover detective was part of them. A law enforcement source said the undercover detective watched passers-by try to stop the attack.

The police source said the detective wasn't investigating anyone on the ride, but he thought he could pick up some tips about criminal activity.

He left once he knew police were on their way and several people had rushed to Mr Lien's aid.

Meanwhile, Ms Rosalyn Ng, wife of Mr Lien, said they were planning to celebrate their wedding anniversary with their two-year-old daughter on Sunday afternoon, AP reported.

She added that they had no option but to flee.

Celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred, who is defending Mr Mieses, claimed he was trying to defuse the tense situation when he was hit.
