Seven months after launching the Redmi smartphone, Xiaomi announced an upgraded version of the model, the Redmi 1S.
Available for pre-order in China starting today, the Redmi 1S ditches the MediTek MT6589T chipset for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core 1.6GHz processor. Aside from the different processor used, the other specs remain similar to its predecessor. It has a retail price of 799 yuan ($166).
For now, the Redmi 1S seems to be available for consumers in China. Xiaomi is launching the Redmi in Singapore this Friday for $169 (inclusive of GST and without line contract). All three telcos have indicated that they are in discussions with Xiaomi to sell its phones.
