Zuckerberg makes over $8b on Facebook surge, becomes world's 6th richest

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's wealth continues to balloon amid a torrid run for his company's stock.

Facebook shares spiked more than 15 per cent Thursday after the social media giant's earnings reported Wednesday blew past Wall Street's most optimistic estimates. The value of Zuckerberg's Facebook stake rose by more than US$6 billion (S$8.5 billion) as of 2 p.m. ET.

The gain brought the 31-year-old Zuckerberg's net worth above US$47 billion, making him the world's sixth-richest person, according to Forbes. He passed Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who boasts a net worth of US$44 billion.

Facebook shares have now climbed more than 43 per cent in the last year. Its market value now sits at nearly US$310 billion.

Mark Zuckerberg speaks Mandarin at Chinese university dialogue

  • Mark Zuckerberg has shown that he is bent on courting China, where Facebook has been banned since 2009, by speaking entirely in Mandarin during a 30-minute Q&A session.
  • According to the International Business Times, China has the world's largest Internet population and Zuckerberg has long stated his desire to enter the China market.
  • The 30-year-old Facebook CEO uploaded a video clip of the Q&A session held at Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management via his Facebook page on Thursday morning.
  • Earlier this week, Facebook announced that Zuckerberg had been appointed to the board at the prestigious university.
  • The Q&A session he attended was part of a bigger dialogue held to allow Tsinghua students to speak to the university's board members, many of whom are high-profile business leaders and policymakers.
  • When asked why he decided to learn Mandarin, Zuckerberg said that he wished to communicate with his wife's relatives. His wife, Priscilla Chan, is of Chinese descent and has many relatives who speak only Mandarin.
  • Zuckerberg said in the session that he still needed more practice.
  • He also wanted to learn more about Chinese culture and wished to challenge himself as the Chinese language was "very difficult", he said.
  • He added that he had visited various cities in China, and was a big fan of Jet Li's 2006 movie Fearless.
  • When asked what his hobbies were outside of Facebook, Zuckerberg said in Mandarin that he had no time for anything other than Facebook.
  • Showing determination to master the Chinese language, Zuckerberg said he had asked his wife why he was bad at listening in Mandarin. To this, Priscilla responded that his comprehension skills were bad, even when listening to English words.

Zuckerberg will not personally enjoy most of his immense wealth. He and his wife, pediatrician Priscilla Chan, pledged last year to give 99 per cent of their Facebook shares to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which will funnel money into education and health care, among other issues.

Zuckerberg has previously been vocal about education and immigration reform.

On Wednesday, Facebook posted fourth-quarter earnings of 79 cents per share on US$5.84 billion in revenue. Its monthly active user base grew to 1.59 billion people in the quarter.

The company also easily topped expectations for advertising revenue, both overall and on mobile platforms.

Mark Zuckerberg and wife willing to donate millions to education, healthcare

  • In a letter to Maxima posted on his Facebook page, Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan said they were going to give away 99 percent of their company shares - estimated value $45 billion - during their lives in an effort to make a happy and healthy world.
  • Zuckerberg and his wife invested $10 million in Bridge International Academies to support their innovative education program in Africa.
  • The couple are active philanthropists and have donated generously to causes in education and healthcare.
  • "Our society has an obligation to invest now to improve the lives of all those coming into this world, not just those already here." Zuckerberg in November said that he and his wife are donating $20 million to help get high-speed Internet service to US classrooms.
  • A month earlier, Zuckerberg and his doctor wife revealed plans to start a private school in a hardscrabble Silicon Valley town, mixing education with health care.
  • In June of last year, Zuckerberg and Chan began pumping US$120 million (S$170 million) into San Francisco Bay Area schools.
  • Zuckerberg said: "Our major focus in education is personalized learning. That means supporting the development of schools, teachers and technology. When students can learn at their own pace in a way that's personalized to their learning style, the results are amazing."
  • The couple also donated US$75 million to San Francisco General Hospital to help fund critical equipment and technology for the new public hospital.
  • Zuckerberg said that this was an important donation because it was where Priscilla started her career as a doctor.
  • He said: "We believe investing in the health of future generations is one of the most important things we can all do. We're deeply thankful for all the doctors, nurses, community leaders and everyone who has worked so hard to make this new hospital center a reality."
  • Facebook also gives a US$4,000 bonus for parents to help meet the needs of new babies. Parents who are Facebook employees also receive four months paternity and maternity leave.
