MALAYSIA - Selangor police have identified 40 ?hotspots? with the possibility that trouble might occur in the run-up to the March 8 polls.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the areas covered those where Hindraf supporters were likely to cause problems.

He did not name the areas but said police had already taken steps to prevent any situation from becoming ugly.

It is learnt that Batu Caves, Klang and Petaling Jaya were among the areas that have been identified.

"I have directed the CID and anti-narcotics divisions to monitor and gather intelligence at the hotspots that have been identified.

"We will be strict and fair in ensuring that the general election run smoothly,? he told reporters after attending a briefing by Selangor police in Shah Alam on Wednesday.

Musa said 7,846 policemen would be stationed at the nomination, polling and counting centres. They include those from the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) and Public Order and Riot Unit (PORU).

He said 709 additional constables and volunteers would be roped in to handle work at stations.
