No sign of fugitive, says IGP

KUANTAN, MALAYSIA: There has been no sign that fugitive Mas Selamat Kastari, who escaped from a high security prison in Singapore, has entered the country, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said.

He said Malaysian police had been keeping close contact with their counterparts in Singapore and Indonesia to track Mas Selamat down.

"So far, our intelligence unit has yet to receive any information on attempts by the fugitive to enter our shores.

"We have beefed up surveillance and patrolling at all borders to monitor the situation closely," he told reporters Wednesday after attending a briefing on the state preparations for the coming polls here."

Last week, the Jemaah Islamiah leader escaped while under detention, triggering a massive manhunt for him in the republic.

Mas Selamat had been accused of plotting to hijack a plane and crash it into Singapore's International airport.

Musa said photofits of the fugitive had been distributed to all CIQ complexes nationwide and all security personnel from the Customs and Immigration departments had been told to be on the lookout for him.
