Deputy Home Minister Senator Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh has been named as the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kuala Terengganu by-election. Wan Ahmad Farid is the head of the Kuala Terengganu Umno division.

His name was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak at Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said's residence here.

The seat fell vacant following the death of deputy education minister Datuk Razali Ismail on Nov 28. Razali had garnered 32,562 votes against PAS? Mohamad Sabu, who got 31,934 votes, while independent candidate Maimun Yusof obtained 685 votes at the March general elections.

There are 80,325 voters and four state seats in the Kuala Terengganu constituency.
