RAWANG: A 47-year-old man was shot twice and then slashed to death by two men who confronted him while he was sitting in the porch of his house in Jalan Kuala Garing yesterday.
D. Kolandasamy, who is said to be the Kuala Garing village head and a moneylender, was having coffee while watching over his livestock when three men arrived in a grey Ford car at 8.20am.
Two of the men got out from the car while the driver waited in the vehicle. An argument then ensued between Kolandasamy and the two men.
Selangor deputy Criminal Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Khaw Kok Chin said one of the two men then whipped out a pistol and fired two shots, hitting Kolandasamy in the abdomen.
He said the other man then slashed Kolandasamy repeatedly on the neck.
Khaw said Kolandasamy's 51-year-old wife K. Renganayagi, son David Avinas and maid were in the house at the time and witnessed the incident.
He said when Kolandasamy lay motionless on the ground, the men spotted Renganayagi and attempted to grab hold of her. However, she managed to run and hide in a room.
It is understood that the man with the pistol fired at least one shot at Renganayagi but missed.
"When they could not get a hold of the family, the assailants fled in the car," said Khaw.
Renganayagi and neighbours took Kolandasamy to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries at 9.15am. His body was later sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem.
Sources said Kolandasamy was a moneylender whose office was in a hotel in the area. It is learnt that police found a 'black book' belonging to the victim which listed names, phone numbers and amounts lent to borrowers.
Police have yet to determine if the victim was a licensed moneylender.
Khaw said police had yet to establish a motive for the killing. They are looking at all possible angles, including business rivalry and gangsterism.
He said police recovered two Luger 9mm bullet casings. It is learnt that the victim had been in the moneylending business for three years and moved to Taman Seri Rawang a year ago, although he visits his Kuala Garing house daily to look after his livestock.
