PORT DICKSON, Malaysia - A 5-year-old, who was believed to have been playing alone, died after she fell from a table in her bedroom, in Lukut here on Thursday.

In the 8.40pm incident, Long Sok Zian's parents rushed into her room after hearing a loud scream.

With the help of their neighbours, they brought the child to hospital.

However, on the way to Tuanku Jaafar Hospital, in Seremban, the third of four children, died at 9.45pm.

Long's father, a 33-year-old mechanic, then lodged a police report at the district police station at 10.25pm, accompanied by the deceased's mother, a 25-year-old housewife.

District police chief Superintendent Baljeet Singh said that police would wait for a complete post-mortem report, although the preliminary report revealed that the cause of death was consistent with a fall.

"The report states that the victim suffered internal bleeding after coming into contact with a blunt object. It says that the three injuries sustained on the head are consistent with a fall.

"Initial investigations revealed that there was a mattress and a 60cm high table in her room, which is where the victim may have fallen down from," he said here yesterday.

He added the case would be investigated under Section 3 (1) (a) of the Child Act 2001 for child abuse and neglect.

"We will record a statement from the victim's parents, brothers and sisters and neighbours, and also check on the family's history. Among the angles we are looking at is how a young child could have fallen and died in such a condition.

"It may be that the parents took all the necessary precaution but the child could have been very active. We still need to view the complete post-mortem report to facilitate our investigations."
