Mystery powder sparks alarm

When a man in his 40s handed a stack of papers to an officer at a neighbourhood police post and left hurriedly, his action immediately raised concern.

Concern turned to alarm when an officer inspected the pile of papers and found powder on them.

Fearing that the powder could be toxic, the officers immediately notified the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

At least three police cars and five SCDF vehicles - including a fire engine and an ambulance - were sent to the scene.

An area about the size of two badminton courts was cordoned off.

Residents gathered at the playground in front of the block and the carpark behind, baffled about what was happening.

For the two hours, SCDF officers were seen walking back and forth between the vehicles and the back of
the police post.

An officer in a yellow protective suit said "operations were going on" and requested The New Paper team to stay at a safe distance.
