Over 8,000, goats flown in for Hari Raya Haji
Tue, Dec 18, 2007
The Straits Times

OVER 8,000 sheep and goats arrived on Tuesday for the annual Islamic sacrificial ritual.

The first batch of 2,700 sheep and goats were flown in on a cargo plane - for the first time.

The second batch of 5,503 sheep ordered by the Singapore Mosques Korban Committee is due to arrive by ship on Tuesday night at Jurong Port.

The batch was distributed to 43 mosques and three organisations.

The ritual, or korban - which will take place on Hari Raya Haji on Thursday - commemorates Abraham?s willingness to sacrifice his son, Ishmael, in obedience to God.

In recognition of Abraham's faith, Ishmael was spared when a ram appeared to take his place. The rite also reminds Muslims of the need to share what one has with the less fortunate.

In Singapore, mosques and Muslim organisations perform and administer the ritual on behalf of Muslims. The meat is then distributed to the poor and needy and to the family and relatives of those who are offering the korban.
