RELATIVES of the family of four Singaporeans killed in a horrific crash on the North-South Highway in Johor are preparing to bring back their bodies and the only survivor - a two-month-old baby girl - on Friday afternoon.
The embalmers are preparing the four bodies at the Tangkak Hospital mortuary. Earlier this morning, two vans bearing four coffins arrived at the hospital, which is about 20 km away from the accident scene.
Killed in the crash on Thursday morning were Mr Bong Kwang Hong, 37, his wife Madam Kor Yee Lin, 36, son Justin Bong, two, and his mother-in-law Pang Chee Seng, 68.
Mr Bong, who owned an adventure tour agency and the driver of the seven-seater Mitsubishi MPV his family was in, died when he was taken to the Tangkak Hospital in Johor. The other three family members died on the spot.
Baby Jolene, who was flung 10m away from the car when it skidded and smashed into three trees along the highway, escaped with hardly a scratch. She is being looked after in the children's ward of the hospital and will return later on Friday with the rest of the family and relatives.
The relatives are expected to collect the four bodies after 3 pm on Friday. They will be brought back to Singapore by two vans from the undertaker's firm.
As embalmers were working on the mangled bodies, loud wails and sobs could be heard from the grief-stricken relatives huddled inside the mortuary.
The Bong, who lived in a condominium in Simei, were on their way to Kuala Lumpur for a break when the car swerved off at the 150.6 km-spot of the North-South Highway at 7.30 am on Thursday and crashed into two trees.
The impact of the crash was so great that three members in the car were flung a great distance. Madam Kor was found 36 km from the wreckage, her mother landed in a drain 20m away while baby Jolene was found in a clearing 10m away.
A semi-conscious Mr Bong was taken in an ambulance to the hospital with the baby, but he died there from his injuries.
The crash left the Mitsubishi a mangled wreck, with part of its roof ripped off.
At least 11 Singaporeans have died on the North-South Highway in the last two years.
