Supporters proud of football team

my paper

I REFER to the letter "Still dreaming about World Cup 2010? Time to wake up" (my paper, June 6).

I was taken aback by the writer's comments.

He mentioned that the plan by the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) to take Singapore to the 2010 World Cup was overdrawn and that Singaporeans have been too naive in their thinking. I strongly disagree with these views.

Our team had already been classified as an underdog but, nonetheless, Singaporeans still turned up and cheered for the country.

When Singapore scored its third goal - even though the game was long gone - we still stood up in pride and celebrated that goal with the team.

The Football Association of Singapore and SSC have done well in bringing Singapore so far on the journey. If they had the same thinking as the letter writer, we would never have reached this far.
