my paper
RazorTV's New Gen online presenters

IF YOU'VE been hankering for a new-generation news source which talks about real issues that affect real people, wait no more.

The Straits Times (ST) Razor TV, a brand-new TV service to be shown over the Internet, will be launched tomorrow. And doing the presenting will be a large team of fresh, youthful and edgy multimedia journalists.

Their presenting style is, as multimedia journalist Amanda Wong describes, "personal, friendly and sincere". She told my paper: "I'm like your best friend on TV. I don't memorise scripts and I speak what's on my mind."

ST RazorTV will focus on hyper-local - very local - news. Even its international news coverage will have a local
perspective, to help Singaporeans understand the relevance of news elsewhere.

From Monday to Friday, it will offer eight hours of news and lifestyle programmes broadcast live from a TV studio at the Singapore Press Holdings Multimedia Centre in Toa Payoh North.

And what's the best thing for viewers?

Amanda said: "What ST RazorTV offers is unlike anything else in the local scene. It's not only live but it also has an interactive element.

"Viewers no longer play a passive role and just absorb information given to them. What they say matters. It can be in the form of feedback, tip-offs or personal accounts."

my paper profiles four Razor TV multimedia journalists.

BRIGHT NEW FACES YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE

E-VON YEUNG, 28

A MULTIMEDIA journalist, E-von will report local news on ST RazorTV. E-von, who has a longstanding
interest in all things local, said: "They call me the Singapore lian."

"That's my image, one that's hyper-local, which is what ST RazorTV is all about," E-von explained. But she's also "a hybrid of cosmopolitan and heartlander".

EVA ELLINGHAUSEN, 21

EVA may look like the girl--next-door but the tiny bundle of sweetness has big concerns for the environment. She does volunteer work and writes for the Environmental Challenge Organisation's newsletter.

She said: "I never take more plastic bags than I need." Eva, who will present ST RazorTV's lifestyle news, received her mass-communication diploma from Ngee Ann Polytechnic this year.

BRYAN DE SILVA, 28

BRYAN, who used to promote local and foreign artistes such as Paul Twohill, looks forward to reporting for ST RazorTV because he will be presenting issues which are close to his heart. Bryan will be delivering news with a slant on edgy subjects like rappers and tattoos.

The bachelor, who is in "a couple of rock bands", counts an Iraq deployment among his life experiences, and is appreciative of what he has.

CELENE TING, 23

CELENE is a picture of daintiness but don't be fooled by the NTU communication grad's demeanour. She went to
war-torn Sri Lanka for her final-year project. She told my paper: "I did the project on my own because I couldn't
convince my friends to risk their lives with me."

Celene wrote a paper on humanitarian research for her thesis. She is part of ST RazorTV's news team.

FRESH READS, BREAKING NEWS

BESIDES RazorTV, the new-look print version of The Straits Times (ST) will also be launched tomorrow.

Among the changes: A new masthead, new fonts for headlines and text, and new colours throughout the paper. The main news and feature sections remain, but some items will be moved for easier access.

The Prime section will be expanded to include more of the top news of the day, commentaries, special reports and analyses. The three weekly pullout specials
will be published on different days. Digital Life will appear on Wednesday, Mind Your Body on Thursday and Urban on Friday.

The website will also sport a fresh look as it will be relaunched as ST Breaking News, with news being broken as it happens and news blogs by writers and editors.

Meanwhile, another value-added offering by Singapore Press Holdings is the mobile Rednano SMS search directory. It is free as Rednano is working with all three telcos, and will pick up the tab. Check it out by heading over to mobilerednano.com.sg for details.

"My favourite was "The Aftermath for Malaysia Election" - (in my opinion), this was a very well crafted world standard image, it is even suitable for a Time magazine cover!"
