Simpler GST refunds in the pipeline

THE Government is considering a new system that would make it easier for tourists to shop and get tax refunds.
The electronic database would do away with the paper forms and long queues visitors face when trying to recoup the 7 per cent goods and services tax (GST).

The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore wants to roll out the scheme by 2010. Yesterday, it released an initial call for proposals on the government business portal GeBIZ.

The aim of such a new system is to 'offer tourists a hassle-free and seamless shopping and refund experience' in Singapore. The proposed new system is an attempt to deal with an increase in visitors here - a number that is expected to grow once the two integrated resorts are completed by 2010.
