>Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong signed the "Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Republic of Singapore Concerning Defence Cooperation" at the Istana today.

Both prime ministers characterised the MOU on Defence Cooperation as a natural progression in the expansion of bilateral defence ties, and expressed their shared conviction that the MOU will enhance the defence relationship between Australia and Singapore.

The MOU on Defence Cooperation outlines the key areas of defence cooperation and serves as a framework to manage existing areas of defence cooperation and promote new areas of cooperation.

It builds on the extensive interactions between the Singapore Armed Forces and the Australian Defence Force to further expand military cooperation, including military exercises, developing military expertise, and resource sharing.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Defence Mr Chiang Chie Foo and his Indian counterpart Defence Secretary Mr Vijay Singh signed the Bilateral Agreement (BA) for the Conduct of Joint Army Training and Exercises in India at the Indian Ministry of Defence in New Delhi yesterday morning.

Mr Chiang, who is in India for an official visit for two days until today, also called on the Indian Defence Minister Mr A K Antony, and met the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Sureesh Mehta and the Chief of the Army Staff General Deepak Kapoor.

This is the second BA to be signed between Singapore and India.

Since the inaugural bilateral army exercise in Apr 2005, the two armies have conducted annual bilateral armour and artillery exercises, code named Ex BOLD KURUKSHETRA and Ex AGNI WARRIOR respectively.

The most recent armour exercise in Babina was successfully concluded in May 08, and the next artillery exercise is scheduled to be held in Devlali in Nov 2008.
