Go-ahead for dorm

The Ministry of National Development announced that it has given the go-ahead for a foreign workers dormitory to in Serangoon Gardens.

The building will house manufacturing and service workers on the former Serangoon Gardens Technical School school site.

Minister for National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan said that the dormitory will house 600 workers, but the ministry will consider upping that figure to 1,000 if there is a need.

When the plan was proposed last month, it drew a strong reaction from Serangoon Gardens residents, who raised concerns about littering, loitering, vice and traffic congestion. They rallied against the idea and 1,400 signed a petition.

To address these concerns, a new access road will be built so that buses ferrying foreign workers to and from the dorms will bypass the Serangoon Gardens estate. The existing entrance at Burghley Drive will be closed.
