SMRT's North-South line partially resumed

Train services on the North-South line have resumed, after a breakdown which lasted about six hours since 7.24am this morning.

According to a latest update at 1.48pm on SMRT's website, full train services on the North-South line have resumed, but with delays expected.

Bus bridging services have also been withdrawn.

This is the third service breakdown this week, just two days after a major glitch affected 127,000 passengers during rush hour on Thursday evening.

A spokesman from SMRT said this morning's breakdown is likely due to a similar problem that caused Thursday's disruption.

SMRT confirmed earlier this afternoon that it had removed five defective trains from the tunnel.

The Straits Times also reported that passengers in one train that was stuck in the tunnel had to walk through the tunnel to the nearest station.

During the disruption, passengers were advised to seek alternative transport or take bus bridging services provided between Toa Payoh and Raffles Place, and a shuttle between Marina Bay and Raffles Place.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew earlier visited Newton MRT station to assess the situation.

He instructed SMRT staff to give passengers an update of how long the bridging service will take to arrive while they stood in line, reported The Straits Times.

Mr Lui told reporters he was off to a meeting at the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to look into measures to prevent a similar incident from happening again.

According to an AsiaOne reader who was at Orchard MRT station at 11.30am, "most of the gantries were closed and every passenger who tried to enter was asked where he was going to".

The staff then advised them if they could take the train, or if they should find another way of getting there.

Timeline:

9am: Northbound train service between Raffles Place and Jurong East available, with reduced frequencies to Toa Payoh.

10.35am: Southbound train services from Toa Payoh to Marina Bay are disrupted. Northbound service from Marina Bay to Raffles Place not available.
