MALAYSIA: Perak CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Ismail Yatim said police, acting on a tip-off, arrested the four, aged between 19 and 50, at the 297.9th kilometre of the North-South Expressway, near Gopeng, on Jan 18 at 7pm.
"Among the items seized from their Toyota Wish were RM40,936 cash, 13 mobile phones, two forged police authority cards, pepper spray, 13 forged road tax stickers, a fake identity card, a Customs Department security card and a Malaysian Airlines security card," he said yesterday.
Speaking during a press conference at the state police contingent, SAC (II) Ismail said the money was from a robbery in Selangor a few days earlier while the Toyota Wish was reported stolen in Taiping last year.
"With their arrests, we believe at least nine cases in Perak, Selangor and Penang have been solved," he added.
Initial investigations showed that two of the gang members were under restricted residence in Negri Sembilan and Malacca while another was involved in a shoot-out with the police in Penang last year, SAC (II) Ismail said.
"We are tracking down other gang members," he said, declining to reveal how many members of the gang were still at large.
SAC Ismail said the gang's forte was hijacking luxurious vehicles and robbing people who had just withdrawn money from banks.
The current members are remnants of the gang responsible for more than 150 robberies, including cargo hijackings and warehouse break-ins, in the 1990s.
Among the gang's most daring jobs last year was stealing a RM963,000 Porsche 911 Targa 4 from the Auto City showroom in Seberang Jaya.
