TOKYO - A JAPANESE woman allegedly embezzled millions from her company for a man she had never met, police said yesterday.

Sachiko Tsukada, 30, a former accounting official at a transport company, reportedly got to know Masafumi Hirosawa, 32, on an Internet dating site in late 2001.

The unemployed Hirosawa maintained contact with her over the telephone and e-mail, and sent her pictures of a man who was not him.

According to the Yomiuri Shimbun, when Hirosawa asked her to send him money for his sick mother, Tsukada dipped into her savings or borrowed but eventually started stealing from her company.

Hirosawa used the money to fund a life of debauchery.

A police spokesman said the total sum of money they stole is believed to be 120 million yen (S$1.6 million).

Both were arrested on Thursday on theft charges.

Local reports said the company had filed a civil lawsuit against the couple, demanding 153 million yen in damages.
