AHMEDABAD, India (Reuters) - Six male professors have been arrested for gang-raping a young female student and molesting several other women at a state-run college in western India, police said on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old trainee teacher fainted in a college assembly on Monday, police said, before breaking down in front of the college doctor and saying she'd been repeatedly raped.

The girl says she was attacked 14 times by the professors at Primary Teacher's Training College in Gujarat state over the last six months, police said.

Enraged students and parents damaged the college building and beat up the professors before the police were able to arrest them.

More than 90 other young women at the college have since added their complaints of sexual harassment, police said.

"Eve teasing", an Indian euphemism for sexual harrassment or molestation, has been a growing problem for years on the subcontinent. A recent string of sexual harrassment cases has made national headlines and sparked a debate about how women are being treated in a modernising Asian power.
