JAKARTA - THE Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission began on Wednesday to question Bank Indonesia Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah over alleged bribery of several lawmakers.

The central bank chief arrived at the commission's compound here accompanied by his lawyer Muhammad Assegaf for his first questioning since he was named suspect on Jan 25.

'I come here at a summons by the commission and because I am a law-abiding citizen,' Mr Abdullah told journalists who were packing the commission since early of the day.

Mr Abdullah and two senior central bank officials were accused of disbursing 31.5 billion rupiah (S$4.8 million) several years ago from the bank's foundation to several legislators, allegedly aimed at having a new central bank law passed.

Earlier this month, he announced that he would not seek a reelection when his term ends in May. -- AFP
