TAIPEI - A MODERATE 5.5-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Taiwan on Wednesday, the central weather bureau said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The tremor struck at 1.31am (1.31am Singapore time) and was centred 7.2 kilometres north-west of Taoyuan in southern Kaohsiung with a depth of 3.6 kilometres underground, the bureau said.

An aftershock with a 4.9-magnitude occurred some five hours later, it added.
