TOKYO, JAPAN - A WOMAN died on Tuesday of injuries suffered in an earthquake last week in northern Japan, authorities said, confirming the first death from the 6.8-magnitude tremor that left at least 200 people hurt.

The woman, 64, went into a coma after falling out of a hospital bed in Fukushima prefecture when the earthquake struck after midnight on Thursday, a local government official said.

'She was under intensive medical treatment but died today,' a prefectural official said.

Dozens of people suffered broken bones or other significant wounds in the quake, according to national authorities.

Japan experiences 20 per cent of the world's powerful earthquakes and has built an infrastructure meant to withstand them, limiting the number of casualties in most major earthquakes.
