NARATHIWAT, THAILAND - SUSPECTED separatists on Sunday shot dead two Muslim village chiefs in the restive Thai south, police said.

A 61-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting in Narathiwat province early on Sunday afternoon, local police said, while a 47-year-old man was shot dead in nearby Pattani province.

Both were elected community heads of their respective villages, a frequent target for southern insurgents battling the Thai state.

More than 3,400 people have been killed since fresh separatist unrest erupted almost five years ago in the mainly Muslim region. Tensions have simmered since Thailand annexed the mainly ethnic Malay sultanate in 1902. -- AFP
