People in trance mar court hearing
Tue, Nov 10, 2009
The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network

A shaman was called to heal two protesters who went into a trance outside the Kediri District Court in East Java on Monday, during a hearing of a neighbor charged with illegal occupation of a company's land.

The protesters were watching a Javanese horse dance performance, which commonly involves sacred spirits that enter the body of the dancers and put them into a trance-like state, in the rally held to demand the release of their neighbor, Suselo.

While in a trance, the two people forced their way into the courtroom, braving a cordon of police and security officers, Antara state news agency reported.

The shaman uttered magic spells and blew smoke onto the heads of the two protesters to help them recover.

One of the two men said, after he had regained consciousness, that he did not realize what he had done.

Hundreds of people who had joined the rally dispersed as the judges adjourned the trial, but they vowed to stage another protest unless the panel of judges fulfilled their demands.
