Train-bus collision kills seven in Vietnam

HANOI - At least seven people have been killed in a collision between a train and a bus in the Vietnam capital's suburban district, a railway source said Monday.

Three people died at the scene of the accident on Sunday in Hanoi's Thuong Tin district while four others died on the way to hospital, a staff member at the Vietnam Railway Corporation said, citing an official internal report.

Fourteen others were injured, she told AFP, adding the accident happened as "the bus deliberately crossed the railway when the train was heading north."

The Vietnam News daily quoted police saying the traffic light was broken at the intersection were the accident happened.

According to the Tien Phong (or Pioneer) newspaper, the bus was carrying nearly 30 people who were on their way home from an engagement ceremony. The bus driver and the future groom were safe.

Traffic rules are often ignored in communist Vietnam where nearly 13,000 deaths were reported in traffic accidents last year.
