Australian stocks fall after Wall St plunge

>MELBOURNE, Sept 16 - Australian shares slid as much as 2.7 percent in early trade on Tuesday after U.S. stocks slumped on fears about banking instability as Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy and insurer AIG battled to survive.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was down 2.3 percent or 109.4 points to 4,708.3 by 0015 GMT.

New Zealand's NZX-50 index fell 93.2 points, or 2.8 percent, to 3,226.66.
