KUALA LUMPUR

At 9.30 am today, there were 327 gainers, 36 losers and 88 counters traded unchanged on the Bursa Malaysia.

The KLCI was at 969.34 up 18.58 points, the FBM2BRD was at 4,651.21 up 54.11 points, and the FBMEmas was at 6.409.91 up 123.11 points.

Turnover was at 137.152 million shares valued at RM222.938 million (S$93.01 million).

SHANGHAI

Chinese share prices opened sharply higher on Tuesday following a powerful rally in overseas markets sparked by global efforts to shore up battered financial systems, dealers said.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers A and B shares, opened up 65.50 points, or 3.16 percent, at 2,139.07.

The Shanghai A-share index added 68.74 points or 3.16 per cent to 2,246.66, while the Shenzhen A-share index rose 15.89 points or 2.79 per cent to 584.47.

TOKYO

Japan's Nikkei stock index surged 13.04 per cent by the lunch break on Tuesday, one of its biggest ever rises, after governments came to aid of banks crippled by the credit crunch.
