'Legend' holds on to lead at foreign box office

LOS ANGELES - Four films tallied over $10 million each at the foreign box office last weekend, led by reigning champ "I Am Legend" with $39.8 million, according to final data issued Monday.

The Will Smith smash was followed by "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" , "Alien vs. Predator" ($13.6 million) and "Alvin and the Chipmunks" .

"The Golden Compass" and "Enchanted" each earned $8.2 million, "Bee Movie" came in with $6.6 million and "American Gangster" $6.5 million. ("Compass" had issued a $15 million estimate on Sunday.)

In the specialty market, "Into the Wild" arrived at No. 1 in France with $2.1 million, and "Charlie Wilson's War" opened at No. 3 in the U.K. with $2.6 million. "Juno" will kick off its international campaign this weekend in Australia.

"I Am Legend" opened at No. 1 in Germany with $10.7 million, and in Italy with $8.6 million, dominating both markets. After three weeks at No. 1 in the U.K., the sci-fi thriller has earned $43.6 million. Other big contributors to the film's $221.4 million foreign total include Japan ($33.4 million), France and Australia .

"National Treasure," which has yet to open in such countries as the U.K., France and Germany, climbed to $126.8 million internationally. Top markets include Japan ($18.8 million), Russia .

"Alien vs. Predator" advanced to $53.2 million, with help from No. 1 openings in Russia and Spain ($2.4 million).

"Alvin and the Chipmunks" lifted its total to $80.9 million following openings in Poland, Egypt and Serbia/Montenegro and solid holdovers in the U.K. , Germany ($7.7 million) and Mexico .

Other foreign totals: "Enchanted," $151.1 million; "The Golden Compass," $240.4 million; "Bee Movie," $142.2 million; "American Gangster," $81.2 million; "Beowulf," $111.4 million; and "P.S. I Love You," $20.9 million
