AN ANCIENT tale about girl power will be hitting the stage this Saturday.

Twelve fearsome widows who defend their country from encroaching barbarian tribes are the stars of the Cantonese opera, Women Warriors Of Yang Family.

The $40,000 production is put on by the Chinese Theatre Circle, Kreta Ayer Community Club and the Guangzhou Hong Dow Cantonese Opera Troupe.

Directed by opera veteran Joanna Wong, the three-hour epic production will play for only one night at the Drama Centre.

The opera is based on the popular legend, Conquest Of The West By The Twelve Widows, which has been dramatised on stage and screen.

The story is about a Song dynasty military family. All the men, except for a 15-year-old boy, are killed by enemy forces.

Enraged by grief and fuelled with patriotism, the widows, led by the 100-year- old matriarch, take up arms against the enemy and defeat it.
