LONDON, ENGLAND - A LETTER written by a young Princess Diana in which she admitted trying to marry off her elder sister to her future husband Prince Charles was sold at auction in England Tuesday for 12,000 pounds (S$30,666).

In 1978, aged 17, the future Princess of Wales wrote to her nanny, Mary Clarke, that she and her brother Charles and sister Jane were trying to 'marry off Sarah to various men but have failed in every direction'.

'We even thought Prince Charles might have been in the running but were relieved when that passed,' she wrote.

The letter sold for 12,431 pounds including buyers premium and tax, according to auctioneers Reeman Dansie.

In the same letter, Diana - who became a style icon after her 1981 marriage to Prince Charles - said that she loved to sing and dance but 'my voice sounds awful and watching me dance is like watching an elephant, so no one does!'

Three other letters she wrote to Clarke sold for 16,079 pounds.

Charles and Diana married in a fairytale wedding, but divorced in July 1996 and the following year, the princess died in a car crash in Paris. -- AFP
