PM Lee and Lee Kuan Yew attend Dr Toh's wake

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew visited the late Dr Toh Chin Chye's funeral wake on Saturday.

Dr Toh was the founding chairman of the People's Action Party.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew arrived at 7.30pm on Saturday evening and signed the condolence book, before taking a long look at Dr Toh's portrait.

He then spoke briefly to Dr Toh's son-in-law, Johnny Ng and grandchildren before spending a quiet moment looking at the late Dr Toh.

Earlier in the day, PM Lee spoke to the media about the legacy that the late Dr Toh left behind and the role Dr Toh played in the struggle of early Singapore.

While various Ministers and Members of Parliament visited the wake, so did past colleagues of Dr Toh which included former Senior Minister of State, Lee Khoon Choy, who shared various anecdotes about the first PAP Chairman.

Dr Toh passed away at home on Friday morning and his funeral will be held at the Mandai crematorium on Tuesday, Feb 7.

Dr Toh co-founded the People's Action Party in 1954 and was its first chairman. Throughout his 22 years in Cabinet, he served as deputy prime minister, minister for Science and Technology and minister for Health.

He retired from politics in 1988.
