Past fatalities during endurance events

December 2011

A 22-year-old undergraduate at the Singapore Management University died during the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore on Dec 4 last year.

Mr Malcolm Sng Wei Ren reportedly collapsed after completing a 21.1km half marathon at the Padang at approximately 8.30am.

August 2009

The chief executive officer of Deutsche Telekom Asia died while taking part in the Osim Singapore International Triathlon on Aug 2, 2009.

Mr Calvin Lee Wee Sing, 42, ran into trouble in the swimming segment.

He was unconscious by the time he was taken ashore and died in hospital soon after.

August 2007

A regular serviceman died on Aug 26, 2007 after completing the Safra Sheares Bridge Run & Army Half Marathon.

Captain Ho Si Qiu, 25 was a platoon commander at the Officer Cadet School.

Captain Ho collapsed at 7am after a 21km run and could not be revived by onsite medics and at the Singapore General Hospital.

June 2007

National triathlete Thaddeus Cheong, 17, collapsed on June 24, 2007 after finishing third in a South-east Asia Games triathlon selection trial.

The first-year student at Raffles Junior College had just swum 1.5km, cycled 40km and run 10km at Changi.

He clocked a personal best before collapsing and died soon afterwards.
