IDA calls for pre-qualifying bidders for ultra-fast broadband network

THE Infocomm Development Authority (IDA) on Monday called for technology firms to come forward to 'pre-qualify' themselves to operate Singapore's ultra-fast broadband network.

This is another step in the long-drawn process to build the Next-Generation National Broadband Network, which will be at least 10 times faster than now.

The latest exercise is to pre-qualify companies bidding to be an Operating Company (OpCo), which will run the telecom switches in the new network. The tender for this will be awarded in the first quarter of 2009.

The IDA had earlier called for a tender for the Network Company, which will lay the cables into homes, schools and offices island wide.

The separation, said IDA, will ensure no one telecom operator controls the entire network, which it is helping fund. It will be available island wide by 2015.
