MELBOURNE (AFP) - AUSTRALIAN police said on Sunday they had made an arrest over the death of Indian toddler Gurshan Singh.
The body of the three-year-old, who was in Australia with his parents, was found in long grass beside an isolated road in Melbourne's north on Thursday night. He was fully clothed and there were no visible signs of injury.
'An arrest has been made,' senior constable Marty Beveridge told AFP. 'An out-of-court session is going on now.' More details were expected to be available later Sunday once the court session finished.
The boy's parents, who had both been in Australia for study and had been due to leave for home this week, were seen leaving a meeting with police detectives earlier Sunday.
'Police are very close to the person... who has done the crime,' a friend who was accompanying the couple told waiting journalists.
The boy's death had threatened to cast a shadow over Australia-India relations following a string of other attacks against Indian students, including one on a 21-year-old Punjab man who was killed in January.
