TAOYUAN, TAIWAN - A university student is believed to have died from electrocution while having a shower at a Taoyuan County fitness center, police were cited by local media as saying yesterday.
Doctors pronounced Wen Chun-hsiang, 23, dead at 1 a.m. Thursday after he was rushed to Taoyuan Veterans Hospital from the fitness center, according to a Liberty Times report.
Police investigations revealed Wen, a student of Ming Chuan University, died as a result of cardiac arrest from electric shock.
Police said they were still determining whether the fitness center was responsible.
The fitness center's manager, surnamed Chen, expressed his condolences and promised Wen's family the center would take full responsibility, the Liberty Times report said.
But the center was still awaiting the results of the investigation, Chen said.
Wen arrived at the fitness center in Guishan Township at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, reported the United Evening News.
An employee of the facility later found Wen lying on the ground in the shower room and retrieved a fitness instructor, surnamed Lin, for help.
Lin said he felt an electric shock when he touched the shower head, prompting him to kick it away. He performed CPR before calling the police, Lin said.
Investigators suspected a leakage in electric circuits behind Wen's shower sent currents through the showerhead, electrocuting the victim.
Lin was not breathing and had no heartbeat when he arrived at the hospital, the hospital's doctor Wang Chen said, adding he was pronounced dead after two hours of treatment.
