Celebrities' bid to contest Indonesian poll fails

INDONESIA - A number of celebrities have failed to win support from political parties which they need to contest the South Tangerang mayoral election on Nov. 13.

South Tangerang election commission chairman Imam Perwira Bachsan said that until the registration for candidates was closed on Saturday, only singer-cum-comedian Andre Taulani was signed for the election as the running mate of Arsid, secretary of the Tangerang regency's Integrated Permit Agency.

Earlier, a number of celebrities, such as senior model Sandy Harun, actress-turned politician Marissa Haque, dangdut male singer Saipul Jamil, comedian Akri and soap opera star Hasnaeni Muslim, had declared readiness to run for the poll.

Bachsan said four tickets would undergo administrative screening before they were declared eligible to contest first regional election in South Tangerang since the municipality was founded in 2008.

The pair of Arsid and Andre is nominated by the United Development Party (PPP), People's Conscience (Hanura) Party, Greater Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party and Crescent Star Party (PBB).

Major parties like the Democratic Party, Golkar Party, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, Prosperous Justice Party and National Awakening Party have nominated Airin Rachmy Diani, sister-in-law of Banten governor Ratu Atut Choisiah, their mayoral candidate and Benyamin Davnie her running mate.

The commission has also registered the pair of Yayat Sudrajat and Norodom Sukarno and the pair of Rodiah Najibah and Sulaiman Yasin, who will run as independent candidates.

Marissa was not available for comment, while Sandy declined a request for an interview, saying she was undergoing a massage at a beauty salon.
