JAKARTA, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Indonesia will seek 22 trillion rupiah (S$3.3 billion) in compensation from Thailand's state-run PTT Exploration and Production Plc (PTTEP ) after a 2009 Timor Sea oil spill, the transport minister said on Tuesday.

A government source had previously told Reuters the claim would be around $3 billion, but PTTEP had said the claim was not backed by evidence of economic damage from the oil spill, which occured after a rig operated by PTTEP Australasia caught fire.

"According to our calculations, it is about 22 trillion rupiah that we'll be putting forward," Transport Minister Freddy Numberi told reporters on Tuesday.

"The affected area was around 30,000 square kilometres."
