JAKARTA - The anti-Malaysia demonstrations in front of the Malaysian embassy here are continuing, with a group of students participating in the protests yesterday.
Bernama reports that the students, claiming to represent the Jakarta law undergraduates' movement, defiled the Malaysian flag with an egg, set fire to it and hurled it into the embassy compound.
They also threw rotten eggs and salted fish into the embassy compound and defiled the name plaque of the embassy with wheat flour and rotten salted fish.
Several of them carried banners which bore words condemning Malaysia, saying diplomacy was dead and wanting Malaysia to be "crushed".
The demonstration, which lasted about 30 minutes from about 11am, was monitored by 60 policemen.
In Kuala Lumpur, an Indonesian member of parliament called on Malaysians and her compatriots not to let any incident derail the good bilateral ties between the two countries.
Rieke Diah Pitaloka said both countries should look at the bigger picture and strive to settle issues amicably.
"In matters related to the law, let the laws of both countries take their due course. Let us not lose sight of the bigger picture," she said after meeting Pas MPs at Parliament here yesterday.
Rieke said she was against any form of violence but added that it was within the right of Indonesians to protest against any injustice they felt had been committed against them.
She was referring to the series of demonstrations held in Indonesia by the group calling itself People's Bastion for Democracy (Bendera), which was responsible for throwing faeces at the Malaysian embassy over perceived Malaysian violation of the country's sovereignty.
