The Jakarta Post/Asia News Network

A student of the Denpasar Institute of Medical Science in Bali was found dead inside her boarding house on Jl. Ida Bagus Oka on Tuesday with a knife stuck on her neck.

Police suspected the student, Dewa Ayu Agung Diah Cahyani, 17, a daughter of Bangli industry agency chief Dewa Made Suparta, was a victim of a murder.

Several other tenants of the boarding house said they heard Cahyani scream amid a heavy rain at 5:30 p.m., but they did not dare to leave their rooms.

"All the tenants are women. We were afraid of checking what happened to her," said Ayu Esti, who rents a room three meters away from Cahyani's.

Another tenant, Octaviani, tried to call Cahyani, but received no response. "I managed to reach her once, but suddenly my call was rejected and a moment later her cellular phone was inactive," Octaviani told kompas.com.

The student's remains were admitted to the hospital for an autopsy.
