CHENNAI, 3 SEPT: Tamil superstar Rajinikanth's daughter Ms Soundarya today wed Mr Aswin Kumar, a Chennai-based businessman, in a high-profile ceremony here which was attended by VIPs and celebrities.

Among the politicians and celebrities who attended the ceremony are Tamil Nadu chief minister Mr M Karunanidhi, Union home minister Mr P Chidambaram, Abhishek Bachchan and his wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sri Devi and her husband, Mr Boney Kapoor, Telugu actor and Praja Rajyam leader, Mr Chiranjeevi, and film director Mr Mani Ratnam.

Ms Soundarya is the second daughter of Mr Rajinikanth and his wife Mrs Lata, who is also a moderately known playback singer in Tamil. Ms Soundarya, who entered into film production, has been directing an animation film based on her father called "Sultan: The Warrior." The animation film is yet to hit the screen.

This is the second marriage in the family. Rajinikanth's elder daughter, Ms Aishwarya, married into a film maker's family and is the wife of a popular Tamil film actor Dhanush.

The nuptial was held as per Tamil Brahmin tradition, to which Mrs Lata belongs. Rajinikanth, whose original name is Shivaji Rao Gheakwad, is a Maharastrian Gheakwad.

The food reflected Tamil Nadu and Karnataka cuisines as Rajinikanth grew up in Karnataka, though his film career and superstardom happened in Tamil Nadu.

In a message to his fans, Rajinikanth said though he wanted to invite all of them to the marriage, he was unable to do so because of space constraint and logistic reasons. "Hence, with a heavy heart, I took a decision not to invite you. But I request you all to bless the couple," the superstar said.
