Mr Versatile switches to archery

He finished sixth in the javelin and shot put events at last year's ASEAN Para Games in Myanmar.

This time around, Kevin Wong Peng Lum has set higher expectations for himself, but in a different sport - archery.

Age and endurance levels were the two factors that prompted his switch.

"I have already peaked at that level (for athletics)," said the 36-year-old, who lost his right leg in a traffic accident in 2009.

Wong (below), who will be competing in the standing recurve open category, will be one of the more experienced archers in the Singapore team when the Republic hosts the ASEAN Para Games from Dec 3 to 9.

With experience comes more responsibility, he acknowledged.

And he is targeting gold.

Said Wong, who holds a full-time job as a motorbike mechanic but still trains six days a week: "The minimum goal for me is a bronze." Senior Minister of State for Finance, and Culture, Community and Youth, Sim Ann, visited the Team Singapore archers during their training session at Queenstown Stadium yesterday, to find out more about archery as well as the athletes' personal journeys in the sport.
